In 1995 Professor Jürg Nievergelt encouraged former students to organise regular meetups for computer science graduates, inviting the graduates to the diploma graduation ceremony in May 1996 for this very purpose. His intention was twofold: to make it easier for newly qualified computer scientists to make contact with colleagues with professional experience, and to maintain the contact between ETH and its former students and doctoral candidates and encourage the exchange of information. It was with his encouragement that a group of former students founded the IAETH association in 1996 (Informatik Alumni ETH).

Originally a chemist, Robert Weiss has been working with computer systems in a professional capacity since the 1970s. He has been self-employed since 1980 and plays an active role in shaping the IT landscape in Switzerland. Each year, for instance, he publishes a market report, and contributes articles to both specialist and mainstream publications. He is passionate about making computer technology understandable for the general public. The “Computer poster”, for instance, is extremely well known and provides a written and visual history of information technology in Switzerland and abroad from the very beginning to the present day. Over his career, Robert Weiss has amassed a collection of computers that is unique in Switzerland – many of them still in working condition! His latest project is an association that hopes to make the collection available to the general public in the form of a computer museum.
